It all began one ordinary work day. Nothing unusual. I felt great. Temperature was cool. Then while on break I passed out. All I remember is one moment feeling nauseous and the next moment I hear frantically my name being called…”Dave Dave Dave Dave!” My wrist was piercingly in pain. I opened my eyes and I was looking at a vehicle tire. My wrist hurt because they were checking my pulse. They thought I had a heart attack.
Thank goodness I was with coworkers and very fortunately I was in the parking lot of St Johns Hospital in Springfield, IL just a few hundred feet from the emergency room. For my day job I work as a mechanic on passenger elevators. I shutter to think about what could have happened. I am frequently several stories off the ground, on top of an elevator in an open hoist way. Had I passed out while working, I would not be here today.
It was that day I got very serious about my nutrition. You see, I had recovered from a 30 year eating disorder called bulimia. In recovery and working out regularly, eating food frightened me. I was literally starving myself and my body. Not anorexic but just not fueling my body with carbohydrates, hydrating my body with water and rebuilding my muscle with proteins.
I consulted with a nutritionalist my body building buddy Kevin recommended. I made new choices with food and shifted my thinking. Food was a great thing and had a purpose. To nourish my body and make me strong. Later I was diagnosed with ”runners anemia” and had spells of feeling weak. I read up on nutrition and vitamins. My first realization of the benifits of vitamins was after I began taking iron and I noticed a significant increase in my energy level. I had more pep and was less tired.
Besides good nutrition in this simple formula:
carbs before a workout (FUEL)
proteins after a work out (BUILD MUSCLE)
I also depend on vitamin supplements. Some supplements you can not acquire in foods and your body needs them for healthy function.
Here is my daily vitamin supplement role call:
Daily Multiple
Vitamin C
Calcium
Fish Oil (omega 3 & 6)
Vitamin E
Iron
Potassium
Chromium
Flax Seed Oil
